Sentiment vs. Sentimentality


Sentimentality is sentiment projected to embarrassment, feeling expressed in a facile or affected way. Sentiment (‘true feeling’) was, in the eighteenth century, the pulse by which a man’s health was judged; sentimentality was his heart in a fluttering palpitation.
